Opinion Writing Notes

3 types of onion writing 
  • opinion writing allows writers to take a stand on issues that are important to them and make recommendations. 
THREE TYPES OF STORIES
  • 1. editorial (the official voice of the newspaper) 
  • 2. column (a personal opinion by one writer)
  • 3. Review (an opinion story that evaluates an event, product or service rather than taking a stand on an issue)
  • 1. editorials (OP-Ed) page
  • 2.News sections, represents opinion of individual writings
  • Editorials are the official opinion of the newspaper. 
  • A column gives the point of view of just the person writing it. 
  • Reviews: focus on things readers may want to try.
TYPES OF EDITORIALS 
  • argument 
  • criticism 
  • commendation 
  • explanation 
  • Argument: these editorials take sides on a controversial topic and offer argument for why that opinion is best 
  • Criticism: an editorial of criticism shines light inn a problem in the community(or the world)
  • Commendation: to commend means to praise, and an editorial of commendation praises something good going on in the community 
  • Explanation: an editorial of explanation may take a stand but the goal is to explain an in-depth issue rather than argue a point 
   EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT CLAIMS
  • evidence refers to facts that support reasons for your claims.
TYPES OF EVIDENCE 
  • 1.statistical; use the results of measurements surveys, experiments & observations.
  • 2.Authoritative; appeals to authority 
  • 3.Anecdotal; are stories that illustrate a point. 
  • 4.Analogical; compares 2 different things to determine how something unknown may work.

Column Writing Exploration

This article was in life & arts
Punching out a stress at a group of boxing sessions
The interest i found in this column is how boxing sessions cause cause less stress.
The subject matter is interesting because many people have stress and it's one solution to relieve stress.
The writing style is pretty casual.
The purpose is to give an example of a stress reliever and its some what persuading you to try out this stress reliever.

Its is a sports column.
It is interesting because he is talking about all these new equipment, players, etc. have cause that longhorns to be improving.
The style writing is some what criticizing.
I think the point of this article is to show how the Longhorns have had a turn around.
